Why Your Facebook Ads Are Not Working and How to Fix It

Let me guess. You ran some Facebook ads, spent a few hundred bucks, got maybe one lead if you were lucky, and decided the whole thing was a scam.

I hear this at least twice a week.

Here's the thing though. Facebook ads work. I run them every single day for service businesses and the results are real. But there's a huge difference between running ads and running ads correctly. Most people who tried and failed were doing one of these things wrong.

The first three seconds are everything

Most ads die before anyone even reads them. You have maybe two seconds to stop someone mid scroll before they're gone. If your ad opens with your company name, your logo, or anything that sounds like an advertisement it's over.

The ads that work open with something the viewer instantly recognizes as their own problem. Not 'we are a roofing company serving the Portland area.' More like 'if your energy bill went up this summer your roof might be why.' One makes people scroll. The other makes them stop.

You're probably targeting the wrong way

Facebook gives you a million targeting options and most people pile them all on thinking more filters equals better leads. It usually does the opposite.

For local service businesses I've found that keeping targeting broad and letting the creative do the filtering almost always outperforms a heavily targeted campaign. Facebook's algorithm is genuinely good at finding buyers but it needs room to work. When you over restrict it you cut off half your potential customers before they ever see your ad.

Your offer isn't giving anyone a reason to act right now

'Call us for a free estimate' is not an offer. Every contractor in your city says that. There's nothing there that makes someone think they need to do something today instead of maybe later.

A real offer has three things. It's specific. It has clear value. And it creates a reason to act now instead of later. A free 3D design, a free roof inspection before winter, a free strategy session. Something that makes someone feel like they'd actually be missing out if they didn't take you up on it.

Nobody is following up fast enough

This one stings a little because it's not really a Facebook problem at all.

Studies have shown that 78% of customers go with the first business that responds to them. Not the best business. Not the cheapest. The first one. If someone fills out your form at 7pm on a Tuesday and you call them back Wednesday morning they've already moved on.

The fix is simple but most businesses don't have it set up. An automated text goes out the second someone submits their info. Not an hour later. Not the next morning. Immediately. That one change alone has gotten clients of mine responses from leads they would have completely lost.

You quit before the algorithm figured it out

Facebook's system needs data to optimize. It's not magic. It learns over time which people are most likely to convert based on who's actually responding to your ads. That process takes time and spend.

Most people shut campaigns off after a week because they haven't seen results yet. That's like hiring someone, giving them three days to learn the job, and firing them before they've figured out where the bathroom is.

Give a campaign at least three to four weeks before making major decisions. Test one thing at a time. Let the data tell you what to do next.
